The Story behind

Arrington Creek Pottery

Artist made Stoneware

What can be better than functional and beatiful?

Dishwasher-safe | Microwave-safe | Oven-safe

Our Process

  • Wheel Thrown

Shaping clay on the potter’s wheel is an intricate process. Finding the correct balance and precise thickness takes time, patience, and skill.

  • Trimmed at Leather-hard

Once the clay has been shaped, it needs to dry to the leather-hard stage. Leather-hard clay is still partially wet, but it has stiffened to the point where it can be touched and trimmed to perfection. In order to avoid cracking the clay is dried in a controlled environment.

  • Kiln Fired to Bisque at 1975°

After the clay has completely dried it is considered bone-dry. It is brittle and must be handled with care. The ware is carefully loaded into the kiln and then fired to 1975 degrees. This is when the clay is considered to be bisqueware, still porous, and not yet food-safe

  • Glazed and Kiln Fired Again to 2232°

The porous nature of the bisqueware creates a perfect medium for glazing. We apply our glazes using several techniques including hand dipping, brushing, and splattering. The pottery is now reloaded into the kiln and fired again at 2232 degrees. The pieces are now considered stoneware, vitrified, and ready for use in the microwave, dishwasher, and oven.

Our design, Your home

Let our design become a part of your everyday. Whether it’s a grand show with beautifully crafted canisters, an elegant display of dinnerware, or a coffee mug that becomes part of your daily routine. When an item is handcrafted it holds deeper meaning. We believe that true creativity comes from a dedication to our skills and the freedom to learn from our mistakes. This process has brought our craftsmanship to a level that you can put faith in.

Meet the Artist

Joy Shind: Owner, Artist

The two main ingredients needed to create masterful pottery are skill and design. When people ask me how long it took me to make a large bowl, or canister with a perfectly fitted lid, I like to tell them it took 7 years of skill. Testing my work and feedback from customers has been invaluable regarding good design. A good piece is both beautiful and functional. It should not be too heavy, it should serve its purpose well while fitting into your lifestyle comfortably. A great mug should feel good in your hands. A large mixing bowl should lift easily when stored high and have the correct wall height. These are things built into Arrington Creek Pottery’s Design. Things I think about so you don’t have to.

Arrington Creek has grown into a thriving business in Middle TN. A big thanks to Addie Lane, Nashville Farmer’s Market, Franklin Heritage Foundation Festivals, 1819 Coffee, and Middle TN Arts communities for understanding the value of purchasing from small businesses.

The most rewarding thing about owning this business is knowing that our design is in your home. I have sold thousands of pieces of quality functional art. It thrills me when you tell me that I had the opportunity to make your favorite mug, or that the bowls in your kitchen make serving meals a little more special. Thank you for choosing Arrington Creek Pottery.
